Eight grader Jessie Mills wants only two things: for her mom's boyfriend Zach to marry her mom so they can officially be a family, and for someone to investigate her brother's mysterious death four months ago. Maybe if Evan didn't die the way they say he did, her mom would get better, and then she would stop pushing Zach away. But neither of these things happen, and Jessie's powerlessness only fuels her desire to start fires. The control she feels when burning something makes her feel calm, and gives her peace, for awhile. But when tensions at school and home increase, Jessie's obsession spins out of control, threatening everything she holds dear.
